Lets start.

Topic: Discuss the developments of Internet social network services.
Why: Namely because I participate in many of the social networking websites.
What: 3 different search facilities.
Keyword: Friends Networking
Who: Google, Yahoo Directory and Meta Crawler.

Google:

  • Massive Database.
  • Plenty of results.
  • Allows phrase searching to reduce the number of results.
  • Many other advance capabilties such as operator usage etc.
  • Has proprietary PageRank technology to rank pages.

Meta Crawler:
  • Meta Search Engine.
  • No own database.
  • Searches other search facilities' databases.
  • Consolidates results returned before presenting to user.
  • As accurate as Google, sometimes return even better results.

Yahoo Directory:
  • Subject Directory
  • Complied by human.
  • Suitable for familiar or a particular topic.
  • Mostly accurate but does not return a variety of results like other two.
How:
  • 1st; Google - Innovative features and PageRank system help to yields much more comprehensive results.
  • 2nd; MetaCrawler - Alternative to Google due to its similarities and multiple sources.
  • Last: Yahoo Directory - Just a search of results already categorized in a hierarchy.

UIR: Practical Worksheet 2

Ladies & gentleman, welcome back to another edition of Using Internet Ridiculously!

First off, I would like to declare I'm late for UIR today and I'm very sorry about it.
I would like to apologize to Ms Faridah(sorry if i got your name wrong).

Secondly, I, as usual, would have to post my Practical Worksheet online, so here it goes...

  • Compare the different types of websites

Topic : Developments and trends in the area of RSS/podcasting

2. Based on your research topic, search the Internet for 4 websites with a combination of different types eg personal, organization and subject-based.

3. Using the table below, fill in the details of the websites that you have retrieved.

  • Type of Website : Technology news site
    Resource Name /URL: Arstechnica
Resource Description : The art of technology
  • Type of Website : E-learning site

Reflections on your searching activity

1. Which search facility/ies did you use?
My best friend Google and a little bit of yahoo!

2. Write down all the keywords you had used for searching the resources. Identify those keywords that yield relevant or better search results.
Keywords include RSS trends, RSS, Pocasting, Podcasting Trends. Those that yield better results would be RSS trends and Podcasting Trends.

3. What are the major differences amongst the three types of websites?
Each site focuses on different aspects, like for example, SmallBizTrends is mainly on news and articles for Small Businesses whereas Arstechnica is more about general Technology news and articles etc.

-Compare the different categories of Internet resources (See below)

Part B (Pair activity) Part A is what you are looking at now, my U.I.R blog. Yes, Part A is to make a blog = )

1. Discuss with your partner and pick a topic that relates to your interest eg Music, Movies, Games, Sports. You can also work on a research topic relating to the area related to your respective Diplomas. (Done!)

2. Once both of you have agreed on the topic, identify ONE aspect of the topic that you would like to know more about. For example, you may choose “Music” as the topic and you may decide to choose “Popular music” as an aspect. (Done!)

3. Search the Internet for one example of the resources listed on your chosen aspect:
- Newsgroups and discussion list
- Electronic journal and magazine
- Multi-media source

I can't be bothered to draw an HTML table, so here are the 4 links.
Newsgroups and discussion list:
http://www.hardwarezone.com.sg/ (A forum where hardware enthusiasts gather.)

Electronic journals and magazine:
http://www.chip.com.my/ (A magazine dedicated to the latest happenings and hardware.)

Multi-media source:
http://www.youtube.com/ (The famous youtube.com has a plethora of videos.)

WWW site:
http://www.com/ (where the web begins.)

5. Compare your findings with your partner. How are they similar or different from your partner’s findings?

Similarities:
He used the same search engine as me and he also has the same best friend as me. Google FTW!
